HOW TO STEAL A CHARACTER
We talked about plot stealing in the last post. Now, I’m going to increase my thievery. We can even steal characters. Wow, that’s hard to hear. For some reason there’s the writers’ hubris that we must birth everything from our literary wombs.
That’s insane. How many times in an interview has the question been asked: “So where did you get your inspiration?” I’ve heard all types of artists respond by saying, “I modeled this after that.”
HOW TO ROLL WITH THE PUNCHES
I’m not a huge fan of Natalie Portman. Actually, I’m not much of a fan at all. I’ve tried to like her, but I’ve never been able to get past the lowercase acting. I know I’m going against the grain here, but guess what: This is my opinion, and I have a right to it.
What does this have to do with writing?

DECIDING ON THE RIGHT BOOK COVER ART
Getting the right cover designer can be a headache! And a pocket ache, might I add.
I’ve spent my share of dough on covers, and quite frankly, I’d much like not to do it anymore, if I don’t have to. If you’ve ever had to get a cover done, you know how much of a pain it can be.
Here’s what I’ve found regarding cover designers: Continue reading

DECIDING TO WRITE FULL-FANTASY OR HALF-FANTASY IN YOUR NOVEL
Maybe one day we’ll get to the skill of the George R.R. Martin (the Tolkien of our day – in my opinion). Some will argue – as some typically do – but I truly think that GRRM has redesigned fantasy…although in some cases to a fault.
I know that sounds oxymoronic. But I’ll explain, though I must start by admitting that I did not get on the George Martin train until last year. **William covers his face as the stones start flying** I know, I know. How dare I claim to write fantasy without having first read the fantasy standard. My only rebuttal to that is: “I wasn’t ready…” Continue reading
HOW I DO MY BOOK REVIEWS
Currently I have taken on another endeavor: book reviews!
One of the most enjoyable parts of writing is connecting writers to writers and discussing all things writing. The actual art has been fulfilling / liberating for me in so many ways, I feel that true writers need to be able to express their inner-author.
My hope is take this passion and review published books (self-published or traditionally-published).

HOW YOU CAN GET AS MUCH OUT OF YOUR NARRATIVE AS YOU CAN
So there’s action and thrills and world-building and plot progression and character development and all kinds of -ers, -ings, and -ments that go along with writing.
There are dozens of rules and just as many ways to break those rules, and then there are punctuation patterns and story enders and finishers. It seriously can become as daunting as Santa’s Christmas list.
But in the end, there’s one thing that remains…the story. Continue reading
